postheadericon One day surgery

One day surgery means that the patient, even after surgeries (plastic operations, dental treatments, dental implantation etc.) in general anesthesia, is able to leave the polyclinic with an escort within 24 hours of the operation, and can complete the recovery process in his or her home. This form of treatment lays in-between outpatient and inpatient care. Due to significant increases in healthcare costs, about 20 years ago, American healthcare insurers began searching for ways to decrease the ever increasing financial burden.  Studies showed that by reducing the time of hospitalization following surgery, the so-called hotel cost can be significantly reduced.  For this reason, insurers began to support research that lead to the development of a family of devices which are thin, flexible, connected to computers, equipped with miniature cameras and micro-manipulators lending maneuverability in body cavities in all directions, and the different laser surgical applications.

With the help of these devices new surgical methods were developed, whichgreatly reduced the stress on the patient during surgery, thereby reducing the customary several days of hospitalization to a few hours.

Patients who have one day procedures can leave the outpatient center as early as within 6-8 hours of the procedure, but definitely within 24 hours the latest, and continue the healing process in the familiar confines of their own homes.  Careful arrangement of home care and continuous phone contact with the clinic guarantees the safety of this form of patient care.  One day surgery has strict professional, social, and various other preconditions that are governed by law and are discussed at the stage of the consultation when the need for surgery becomes clear. (i.e. predisposes good general health, without serious systemic disease, patient must take responsibility for  arrangement of home transportation,  home care, must have phone to contact the clinic or the surgeon if necessary, etc).

At our clinic, parts of the operations are performed with different lasers. Without getting into overwhelming detail of their physics we can say of laser light that it possesses such high energy and other special qualities that when directed at tissues needed to be removed, it penetrates the cells and blows them up by turning the intracellular water into steam. The solid constituents of the cells along with the steam combine into the so called laser smoke that has to be continuously removed throughout the procedure. With the help of laser, the abnormal tissue can be "vaporized" with great accuracy in the desired size and depth, while the surrounding tissue is spared. Scientifically: the zone of heat damage of lasers isminimal.

Out of this follows that wound healing is quicker: since the integrity of surrounding tissues is damaged less their repair requires less time.
It seals the less than 0.5 mm diameter vessels in the surgical field, thus bloodlesssurgery is possible.

Only light has contact with the surgical wound, therefore wound infection is out of question.
