Allergy is the hypersensitive reaction of the immune system to different substances (allergens). Nowadays allergy is a rising problem all over the world. There are different types of allergy, i.e. food allergy, pollen allergy, asthma, eczema. Allergic reactions to various metals are more and more common. Use of metal alloys in dentistry and fashion of metal jewellery are among the causes. Amalgam fillings, metal reinforced fixed or permanent tooth replacements contain those allergens as well.

It is difficult to identify the original cause of the allergic reaction. It is good to know that sensitivity to other substances (detergents, cosmetics, chemicals, fashion jewellery, occupational allergies) may 

If a patient had allergic reactions to a metal earring, the same metal cannot be used for dental purposes, because it would trigger hypersensitivity.

Why is it important to manage allergies?

In Europe, 30% of the population is affected by allergies. 16-17% of the population is affected by allergic rhinitis, every fifth by skin allergies, and 2% by food allergy. In Hungary, 2% of the grown up population is registered asthmatic, the real number of asthmatics is higher.
