Herpes, shingles

Cold sores have been well known since centuries. Physicians and many suffering patients are familiar with the symptoms and outbreak. The herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), member of the herpes virus family, causes the outbreak of inflammed itchy blisters around the mouth or on the lips. The blisters break open in a couple of days, and lesions heal with a scab.

Herpes virus infection is a very common condition; about 70-80% of the older age groups are affected. The infection is transferred from person to person. One often ignores that became infected. When the symptoms cease and the lesions heal, one thinks that everything is all right. Unfortunately not. The virus moves from the oral mucosa to the central nervous system, remains latent, waits for a mental stress, fever, menstruation to wake up. When reactivation occurs, the virus travels down the nerves to the mucosa.

In a severely weakened body the herpes simples may cause fever, and even meningitis or encephalitis. It happens very rarely, only in patients with extremely weakened immune system. The herpes virus may cause not only blisters on the lips but eye infections, as inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea as well.
There are more types of herpes virus. The herpes simplex HSV-2 attacks the genitalia, causing blisters even ulcers in this body area. This type of herpes is sexually transmitted. Recently have been stated that in experimental cultures the HSV-1 and the HSV-2 are capable to transform cells to begin tumour building.

Neither the herpes simplex viruses nor their treatment are simple at all, but a well-timed soft laser therapy may considerably alleviate the symptoms.
